Measures to Control Cabbage Butterfly pest

The cabbage butterfly, also known as the imported cabbageworm, is a common pest of cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts. The larvae, which are the caterpillars, are the most damaging stage of the insect, as they feed on the leaves of the plants.

Identification:

  • Adults: White butterflies with black wingtips. Females have two black spots on their forewings, while males have only one.
  • Eggs: Yellow, pointed, and laid singly on the undersides of leaves.
  • Larvae: Green with light-colored hairs and a pale yellow stripe down their back. They can grow up to 30 mm long.

Environmental favorable factors for pests/Diseases:

  • Temperature: 20-25°C (68-77°F) for rapid development of all life stages (eggs, caterpillars, pupae, adults).And 15-35°C (59-95°F) for adult activity and egg laying. Development slows down at these extremes.
  • Humidity: Optimal: Moderate humidity (50-70%) favors development and survival. Above 80% can promote fungal diseases that harm eggs and caterpillars. Below 40% can lead to dehydration and increased mortality in all stages.

Symptoms of Pest/Disease:

  • Large holes: Caterpillars munch on leaves, creating irregular, ragged holes and tattered edges.
  • Chewing marks: Look for distinct signs of chewing along the leaf margins and veins.
  • Tunnels and holes: In advanced infestations, caterpillars may bore into the cabbage heads, making them unmarketable.
  • Contamination: Frass and damaged tissue inside the head can harbor diseases and make the cabbage unsuitable for consumption.
