Cabbage Aphids Pest

Measures to Control Cabbage Aphids Pest

The cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) is a small, soft-bodied insect that is a common pest of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and other members of the Brassicaceae family. They are native to Europe but have been introduced to many other parts of the world, including North America, Asia, and Africa. Cabbage aphids reproduce parthenogenetically, meaning that females can give birth to live young without mating. They can have many generations per year, depending on the climate. In the winter, they overwinter as eggs on host plants.

Cabbage Aphids Pest

  • Type of Infestation: :Pest
  • Common Name: Cabbage Aphids
  • Causal Organism: Brevicoryne brassicae
  • Affected Parts Of the plant: Leaves, Head and Flower Bud

Identification:

  • Cabbage aphids are small, about 2-3 mm long, and are typically green, gray, or blue-green in color.
  • They have a waxy coating on their bodies, which gives them a dusty appearance.
  • They have long, slender antennae and short legs.
  • Both winged and wingless forms exist.

Environmental favorable factors for pests/Diseases:

  • Temperature: Cabbage aphids thrive in mild temperatures, with the highest reproduction rates occurring between 50-68°F (10-20°C). They become less active and stop reproducing below 41°F (5°C) and above 95°F (35°C).
  • Humidity: Although high humidity can sometimes hinder their populations by promoting fungal diseases, moderate humidity levels (around 50-70%) are generally favorable for cabbage aphids.

Symptoms of Pest/Disease:

  • Yellowing and stunting of leaves: This is the most common symptom, caused by the aphids sucking the sap out of the leaves. The leaves may also become crinkled and distorted.
  • Honeydew: Aphids excrete a sticky substance called honeydew, which coats the leaves and attracts other pests, such as ants and sooty mold.
  • Ants: Ants are attracted to the honeydew and can protect the aphids from predators.
  • Cast skins: As aphids grow, they shed their skin, which can be seen as small white flakes on the leaves or stems.
  • Distorted growth: In severe infestations, the aphids can stunt the growth of the entire plant.
