What are Sucking pests & how do they affect?
sucking pests are insects and mites that damage plants by piercing their tissues and sucking out their sap. Sap is full of nutrients that the plant needs to grow and survive. When sucking pests remove sap, they are depriving the plant of these essential nutrients. This can lead to stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and wilting. These pests have specialized mouthparts that act like straws, allowing them to feed on the plant's fluids.
Some of the sucking pests are tiny insects that are difficult to see with the naked eye. However, there are a few places where you are more likely to spot them on a plant:
The undersides of leaves: This is the common place to find pests. They like to hide out in sheltered areas where they are less likely to be disturbed.
Stems: Sucking pests may also feed on the stems of plants, especially young, tender stems.
Flowers and buds: Sucking pests can damage flowers and buds by feeding on them, which can reduce fruit production.
On new growth: Sucking pests prefer to feed on tender tissues, so they may be found on new leaves, stems, or fruits.
Symptoms of chewing pest affected plant:
Discolored leaves: The leaves of infested plants may become yellow, mottled, or pale. This is because the sucking pests are removing chlorophyll, the pigment that gives plants their green color.
Wilting: As sucking pests remove sap from plants, the plants may wilt or droop. This is because they are not able to take up enough water and nutrients from the soil.Stunted growth: sucking insect can stunt the growth of plants. This is because the plants are not getting the nutrients they need to grow properly.
Deformed leaves: Sucking insects on plant can cause leaves to curl, cup, or become distorted. This is because the feeding of the pests damages the plant's cells.
Sticky residue: Some sucking pests, such as aphids and mealybugs, produce a sticky substance called honeydew. Honeydew can attract other pests, such as ants, and can also promote the growth of mold.
Presence of the pests themselves: You may be able to see the sucking pests themselves on your plants. Aphids, for example, are small, soft-bodied insects that are often green, yellow, or black. Mealybugs are white, cottony insects that often cluster on the undersides of leaves.
