Aphids in Brinjal Crop

Measures to Control Aphids in Brinjal Crop

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that are common pests of brinjal, also known as eggplant. They feed on the sap of the plants, which can stunt their growth and reduce yields. Aphids also produce a sticky substance called honeydew, which can attract ants and other pests and promote the growth of sooty mold. Aphid populations and their damage fluctuate considerably across different regions in India due to varying climates. Some areas might experience heavier infestations and worse yield losses compared to others.

Aphids in Brinjal Crop

  • Type of Infestation: Pests
  • Common Name: Aphids
  • Causal Organism: Aphis gossypii
  • Affected Parts Of the plant: Leaves, Stem, Flower

Identification:

  • Appearance: Aphids are tiny, soft-bodied insects typically measuring 1-4 mm in length. They come in various colors, including green, yellow, brown, or black, and have pear-shaped bodies with antennae and long legs.
  • Location: Aphids primarily congregate on the undersides of leaves, stems, and even fruits, where they feed on plant sap.
  • Environmental favorable factors for pests/Diseases:

    • Warm and dry weather: Aphids thrive in temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F) and prefer dry conditions. Hot and dry periods create stress on the plant, making it more vulnerable to sucking insects like aphids.
    • Lack of rain: Rainfall helps wash away aphids and reduce their populations. Prolonged dry spells provide a favorable environment for them to multiply.

    Symptoms of Pest/Disease:

    • Distorted leaves: Aphid feeding can cause curling, cupping, or stunting of leaves.
    • Yellowing: As aphids extract nutrients, leaves may turn yellow or lose their vibrant green color.
    • Sticky honeydew: Aphids secrete a sugary substance called honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes the growth of sooty mold, further weakening the plant.
    • Presence of cast skins: As aphids molt, they leave behind tiny white exoskeletons on leaves and stems.
